Only one pipe shall be unloaded at a time.10.6.3 Under no circumstances shall the pipes be thrown down from the carriers or bedragged or rolled along hard surfaces.10.6.4 The pipes shall be checked for any visible damage (such as broken edges,cracking or spelling of pipe) while unloading Any pipe which shows sufficientdamage shall be discarded.10.6.5 Storing10.6.6 Each stack shall contain only pipes of same class <strong>and</strong> size.10.6.7 Storage shall be done on firm level <strong>and</strong> clean ground. Wedges shall beprovided at the bottom layer.10.6.8 The stack shall be in pyramid shape or the pipes laid length wise <strong>and</strong>crosswise in alternate layers. The height of the stack shall not exceed 1.5 m.10.6.9 Cast iron detachable joints <strong>and</strong> fittings shall be stacked under cover <strong>and</strong>separated from the asbestos cement pipes <strong>and</strong> fittings.10.6.10 Rubber rings shall be kept clean, away from grease, oil, heat <strong>and</strong> light.10.7 Cutting of Pipes10.7.1 Cutting of pipes may be necessary when pipes are to be laid in lengths shorterthan the lengths supplied such as while salvaging the pipes with damagedends or while replacing cast iron accessories like tees, bends, etc, at fixedpositions in the pipeline.10.7.2 A line shall be marked around the pipe with a chalk piece at the point at thepoint where the cut is to be made. The line shall be so marked that the cut istruly at right angle to the longitudinal axis of the pipe.10.7.2.1 The pipe shall be rigidly held on two parallel rafters nailed to cross beams,taking care that the portion to be cut does not overhang <strong>and</strong> the cut mark isbetween the two rafters.10.7.2.2 -saw having a long blade, by slowly rotating the pipe around its longitudinal axisso as to have the uncut portion on top for cutting.10.7.2.3 Cutting of the pipe at the overhang should as far as possible be avoided, it isdangerous as an overhanging end is liable to tear off due to its weight beforethe cut is completed10.8. Trenches10.8.1 The trenches shall be so dug that the pipes may be laid to the requiredalignment <strong>and</strong> at required depth.Urban Administration & Development Department Page 119
