CHAPTER -16MISCELLANEOUSApplicable Code :All the applicable codes shall comply with all currently applicable statutes,regulations, st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> codes. In particular the st<strong>and</strong>ards mention inchapters 1 to 16 shall be referred. In all cases, the latest revision of thest<strong>and</strong>ards/codes shall be referred to. Other IS: Codes not specificallymentioned but pertaining to the use of items given in this chapter shall be partof this Specification.16.1 Cutting of cast iron pipe:16.1.1 The cutting of C.I. Pipes becomes necessary for putting valves, C.I. special etc.It Should be carried out in such way that damages are not caused to the pipes.Cutting should be at right angle to the axis of the pipe. Pipe cutting may bedone by chisel or by cutting machine.16.1.2 Cutting of pipe can also be carried out by the electric arc. Cutting may be doneby using a steel or carbon rod also. This should be done by trained personnel.16.1.3 Chamfering of C.I. Pipes ends by files/grinder is necessary to prevent damageto the rubber ring <strong>and</strong> smooth fitting of joints.16.2 Cutting <strong>and</strong> Threading of G.I. Pipes16.2.1 Where the pipes have to be cut or rethreaded, the ends shall be carefully filedout so that no obstruction to bore is offered.16.2.2 The end of the pipes shall then be carefully threaded conforming to therequirements of IS 554 with pipe dies <strong>and</strong> taps in such a manner that will notresult in slackness of joints when the two pieces are screwed together.16.2.3 The taps <strong>and</strong> dies shall be used only for straightening screw threads whichhave become bent or damaged <strong>and</strong> shall not be used for turning of the threadsso as to make them slack, as the later procedure may not result in a water tightjoint. The screw threads of pipes <strong>and</strong> fitting shall be protected from damageuntil they are fitted.16.3 Cutting of PVC/PVC-U pipes16.3.1 Cutting of PVC pipe should be done on a jig so that the cut surface isperpendicular to the axis of the pipe. It should be ensured that the pipe ismarked around the entire circumference so that proper cut is maintained.16.3.2 Use a fine-toothed h<strong>and</strong> saw <strong>and</strong> a miter box or a power saw with woodworkingblades with a suitable guide. The cutting must not raise a burr or ridgeon the cut end of the pipe.Urban Administration & Development Department Page 197
