15.2.5 Lift: the vertical distance for removal with reference to the ground level. Theexcavation up to 1.5 meters depth below the ground level <strong>and</strong> depositing theexcavated materials up to 1.5 meters above the ground level are included inthe rate of earth work. Lifts inherent in the leads due to ground slope shall notbe paid for.15.3 Earth Work :15.3.1 Classification of soil15.3.1.1 The earth work shall be classified under the following categories <strong>and</strong> measuredseparately for each category:15.3.2 Soft/loose soil : Generally any strata, such as s<strong>and</strong>, gravel, loam, clay, mud,black cotton moorum, shingle, river or nallah bed boulders, siding of roads,paths etc. <strong>and</strong> hard core, macadam surface of any description (water bound,grouted tarmac etc. ) lime concrete mud concrete <strong>and</strong> their mixtures which forexcavation yields to application of picks, shovels, jumper, scarifies, ripper <strong>and</strong>other manual digging implements.15.3.3 Soil requiring use of picks, scarifies or jumpers to loosen stiff clay gravel cobblestones, soling on the road sides, WBM (water bound macadam) etc are knownas hard soil.15.3.4 Mud : Mixture of soil <strong>and</strong> water in a semi solid state is called mud.15.3.5 Ordinary rock (Not requiring blasting):Generally any rock which can be excavated by splitting with crow bars or picks<strong>and</strong> does not require blasting, wedging or similar means for excavation such aslime stone, s<strong>and</strong> stone, hard late rite, hard conglomerate <strong>and</strong> un-reinforcedcement concrete below ground level.15.3.6 Hard rock (Requiring blasting)15.3.6.1 Generally any rock or boulder for the excavation of which blasting is requiredsuch as quartzite, granite, basalt, reinforced cement concrete (reinforcement tobe cut through but not separated from concrete) below ground level <strong>and</strong> thelike.15.3.6.2 Hard rock (blasting prohibited) :15.3.6.2.1 Hard rock requiring blasting as describe above but where the blasting isprohibited for any reason <strong>and</strong> excavation has to be carried out by chiseling,wedging, use of rock hammers <strong>and</strong> cutters or any other agreed method.15.4 Blasting15.4.1 where hard rock is met with <strong>and</strong> blasting operations are considered necessary,the contractor shall obtain the approval of the engineering-charge in writing forresorting to blasting operation.Urban Administration & Development Department Page 176
