spigot & socket pipes while unloading as for as possible pipes shall beunloaded on one side of the trench only.15.17.3.4 The pipes shall be checked for any visible damage (such as broken edges,cracking or splaying of pipes) while unloading. Any pipe which shows sufficientdamage to preclude it from being used shall be discarded. Dragging of pipes<strong>and</strong> fittings / specials along concrete <strong>and</strong> similar pavement with hard surfacesshall be prohibited.15.17.3.5 Wherever a section of pipe, or a fitting is to be lifted or moved, it shall beh<strong>and</strong>led carefully with belt slings. The belts shall be constructed so that nometal bears against the pipe <strong>and</strong> so that the bearing is uniform. The width ofthe belts shall be adequate to prevent any damage to the pipe coating.15.17.3.6 The pipe section may at no time be dropped but shall be lowered care fully in toposition <strong>and</strong> may not be slided along the ground. If it is to be rolled, it may bedone only on slides or ground specially prepared so as to prevent any damageto the coating.15.17.3.7 All State <strong>and</strong> local laws be observed during transportation. The contractor shallsecure permits <strong>and</strong> licenses <strong>and</strong> provide all signals, guards <strong>and</strong> lights that maybe required. Upon delivery the pipe sections <strong>and</strong> fittings shall be placed onspecially prepared ground to protect them from distortion <strong>and</strong> damage. Theground shall be prepared so that they will rest evenly <strong>and</strong> will have uniformbearing throughout their lengths. Valve <strong>and</strong> sluice gates shall be placed onblockings.15.17.4 Storage15.17.4.1 Each stack of pipes shall contain only pipes of same class <strong>and</strong> size, withconsignment or batch number marked on it with particulars of supplierswherever possible. Storage shall be done on firm level <strong>and</strong> clean ground <strong>and</strong>wedges shall be provided at the bottom layer to keep the stack stable.15.17.4.2 The stack shall be in pyramid shape or the pipes laid lengthwise <strong>and</strong> crosswisein alternate layers. The pyramid stack shall be made for smaller diameter pipesfor conserving space in storing them. The height of the stack shall not exceed1.5m.15.17.4.3 Fittings/special shall be stacked under cover <strong>and</strong> separated from pipes. Valves<strong>and</strong> sluice gates shall be placed on blocking.15.17.4.4 Rubber rings shall be stored in a clean, cool store away from window, boiler,electrical equipment <strong>and</strong> petrol, oils or other chemical. <strong>Part</strong>icularly in the fieldwhere the rubber rings are being used it is desirable that they should not be leftout on the ground in the sun or overnight under heavy frost or snow conditions.15.17. 5 Laying15.17.5.1 Excavation15.17.5.2 Before excavating the trench the alignment of pipeline shall be approved byEngineer. The excavation of trenches <strong>and</strong> pits for manholes / chambers shallbe carried out in accordance with the specification <strong>and</strong> shall be done such thatit does not get far ahead of laying operation as approved by Engineer.Urban Administration & Development Department Page 185
