16.3.3 Failure to remove the ridge will result in cement in the fitting or socket beingscraped away from the jointing surfaces, leading to a dry joint with probability ofjoint failure.16.3.4 Remove all burrs <strong>and</strong> ridges with a debarring knife, file, or abrasive paper.16.3.5 A chamfer prevents the cement film from being wiped off into the interior of thesocket during assembly. Pipe <strong>and</strong> must be chamfered at an angle of 15 degreewith a file, To provide <strong>and</strong> approximately 2mm wide, 15 0 chamfer on pipe ends.16.4 Cutting of asbestos cement pressure pipe16.4.1 The pipe should be rigidly held on two parallel rafters nailed to cross beams,taking care that the portion to be cut does not overhang <strong>and</strong> the cut mark isbetween the two rafters.16.4.2 The pipes should be neatly cut at the chalk mark with carpenter -saw having a long blade, by slowly rotating the pipe around its longitudinal axisso as to have the uncut portion on top for cutting.16.4.3 Cutting of the pipe at the overhang should as for as possible be avoided, it isdangerous as an overhanging end is liable to tear off due to its weight beforethe cut is completed.16.4.4 Cut should always be perpendicular/at right angle to the axis of the pipe.16.5 Cutting of Ductile iron pipes16.5.1 The cutting of ductile iron pipe should be done in such a manner so that nodamage is caused to the pipe/cement lining <strong>and</strong> cut surfaces of the pipe issmooth <strong>and</strong> perpendicular (at right angles) to the axis of the pipe.16.5.2 This could be done either by use of chisel or by other suitable mechanicalmeans.16.6 Cutting of Glazed stoneware pipes16.6.1 The cutting of pipe for inserting, fitting or closure pieces shall be done in a neat<strong>and</strong> workmanlike manner without damage to the pipe or glazing so as to leavea smooth end at right angles to the axis of the pipe16.7 Manufacture of Mild Steel Plate Specials :16.7.1 During the course of execution, it sometimes becomes necessary to provide anon-st<strong>and</strong>ard special to fit into the pipeline. This can be conveniently made outof steel plates. An item to cover such emergency is also provided for in theschedule.
