1.4 Jabalia Refugee CampCircumstances of injury: [See also interview EJJ17for circumstances of same event-Ed.]. Accordingto the patient there was heavy shelling in thearea, both from Apache [helicopters] and tanks.All five members of the family were at home.The patient took the children to the dining room,because the room was internal and thought tobe more protected. Her husband remained at theentrance. The 4th floor of the house was hit by amissile/bomb, likely from a tank. The bomb enteredthe house making a hole in the wall, crossed theentrance and exploded in the room where thepatient was with the children, injuring her.Others killed/injured in same event: The patient’sdaughter, 5 months old, was killed immediately. Her3-year-old daughter [EJJ17-Ed.] was severely injuredand is in the same hospital; her husband and son, 20months old, were less seriously injured and are in Gaza.Evacuation and care inside Gaza: The patient’shusband rescued them from the rubble and tookthe children to the Kamal Edwan hospital. Thepatient was evacuated by ambulance after about15 minutes. In Kamal Edwan Hospital, X-Rays weredone and, after a diagnosis of fractured vertebrae,the patient was transferred to Shifa Hospital in GazaCity. The CT scanner was out of order there, so shewas sent to Al Quds Hospital and then back to Shifawith the results of the CT scan. At Shifa Hospital, thewounds to her scalp were sutured repaired.Evacuation out of Gaza: The patient was transferredto St Joseph Hospital in East Jerusalem on 11 Aug2014. Procedures at Erez Crossing were ‘normal’ butshe found the body search extremely painful as shehad several fractures and the soldier ‘did not knowhow to move her’. At the hospital she underwenta spine CT and then spinal surgery after which shewas admitted to ICU for observation. Patient showedimprovement as a result.Comments on displacement: Home completelyor partially destroyed. Alternative accommodationunclear.Comments on rehabilitation: The patient hasundergone surgery to fix the fractured vertebraeand avoid neurological damage. Progress defined as121
