1.5 JabaliaInjuries: Broken knee caused by bullet.Date/time of incident: 30 Jul 2014, 16:30Location of incident: Outside the home of thepatient’s sister, in ‘Izbet Abed Rabbo, east JabaliaCircumstances of injury: The patient was on his wayto his sister’s home to bring her to his home becausethe situation where his sister lives was dangerous.He went there on foot and before reaching hisdestination the area came under fire. He was shotin the knee. He did not see who shot him or fromwhere but assumes it was Israeli Special Forcesbecause they broke through that area at that time.Others killed/injured in same event: UnknownEvacuation and care inside Gaza: The patientbound his own wound and crawled back away fromthe source of fire. He was evacuated to KamalEdwan Hospital in Jabalia but the journey, usuallya 10-minute drive, took 1 hour and 15 minutes. Heunderwent fixation and stayed there until 3 Aug2014, after which he was referred to Najah Hospitalin Nablus, West Bank.Evacuation out of Gaza: The patient waited forapproval of coordination for the ambulance in thehospital on the day of evacuation from 11:00 to15:00. He then waited at the Palestinian checkpoints[before Erez Crossing - Ed.] for 2 hours and 30minutes. He then waited a further 30 minutes beforebeing allowed by the Israeli forces into Erez Crossing.In Erez Crossing the procedure was 30 minutes,including a body search with gloves, and then theywere transferred by ‘back-to-back’ to an ambulanceon the other side. The patient is currently waiting forsurgery, which has been twice postponed.Comments on displacement: According to thepatient his immediate family members are scatteredamong relatives’ homes. He is unclear where he willbe returning to.Comments on rehabilitation: The injury will leavepermanent disability and the patient will needcrutches. He will be cared for by his brother.129
