4.1 Khan Younishusband went to Khan Younis to stay with hisfamily. While she was in Khuza’a a rocket barragestarted and the family spent three full days gatheredin the kitchen, which was seen as safest placein the house. These included her elderly parents,her brother and sister-in-law with their six youngchildren and her own son. On Tuesday 22 Jul 2014, 14young men from the neighbourhood told them thatthey could leave the area and walk towards KhanYounis. According to the patient around 500 peoplefrom Khuza’a set off on foot together, most of themfamilies, women and children, holding improvisedwhite flags made of bed sheets, clothes or evenwhite plastic bags. There were Israeli soldiers andtanks all over the place. At a certain moment a tankgun turned towards them and the crowd stopped,terrified. Suddenly a rain of bullets fell over them.The patient said these were neither tank shells ormissiles nor big explosions, just gunfire and totalchaos among the people. The shooting didn’t comefrom the tank. She couldn’t see where the bulletswere coming from but she thinks there were snipersin the houses around them.Samia felt something hot in her abdomen and feltblood flowing. Her son was also wounded (threebullets scratched his shoulder) and cried at thesight of the blood. Trying to calm him, she hastenedback with most of the people, holding her childwith one arm and her abdomen with the other. Shecouldn’t reach her family’s house, so was taken tothe primary healthcare clinic of her cousin, a privatedoctor 15 called Kamal Qdeih Abu Rijala, for first aid.The small clinic was crowded with 60-70 people,all lying on the floor in the inner yard and at theentrance. The doctor could only clean the wound anddress it, and she was accommodated in the inneryard, on the floor, until she felt very sick and couldn’tbreathe.
