2.7 OtherInjuries: Maxillofacial injury on left side due toshrapnel, with multiple fractures and complicationsdue to massive blood loss.Date/time of incident: 22 Jul 2014 between 10:00and 11:00Location of incident: At the patient’s home,in Jala Street, Gaza CityCircumstances of injury: The victim was in bed withhis wife. It was Ramadan and they were in bed latethat morning after sohur (last meal before startingthe fast at sunrise-Ed.). At the time there was anintense attack on Shuja’iya. Their house is not farfrom Shuja’iya and they could see the shelling inthe distance, but felt safe because they thoughtthey were far enough from the area. Suddenly theneighbourhood was hit by several missiles froman F16 aircraft, with no warning. A dense cloud ofsmoke and dust filled the area. A piece of shrapnelentered through the window, hit the opposite wall ofthe room, and fell on the bed where the patient wassleeping with his wife, injuring him on his left cheek.Others killed/injured in same event: NoEvacuation and care inside Gaza: The patient’s uncleand some neighbours took him to Shifa Hospital ina private vehicle. The ambulance arrived later, whenhe had already been taken to the hospital, wherehe had a cardiac arrest, but recovered after Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation.He was in Shifa Hospital for 5 days and then wasreferred to St Joseph Hospital in East Jerusalem.Evacuation out of Gaza: The patient was transferredto St Joseph Hospital in East Jerusalem. During thetransfer to Erez Crossing there was shooting on theroute and they had to stop for a while. The patientwas in serious condition and suffering great pain.At Erez Crossing the procedure took one hour andwas ‘normal.’ He was in ICU at St Joseph Hospitalfor 4 days and was released back to Gaza on 31Aug 2014. However they were detained at ErezCrossing because Israeli security found some moneyon them, which they had been given as donationsduring their stay in Jerusalem, to continue themedical treatment and to support their family backin Gaza. The amount they had collected was ILS158
