At Erez Crossing there were no delays. An Arab man swept over his body with gloves andchecked for residue; 5 a soldier scanned him with ahand-held machine.Comments on displacement: The patient’s familyhome is completely destroyed. His wife and parentsare in Gaza.Comments on rehabilitation: At Maqassad Hospital, the external fixation was removed (because ofinfection) and at time of interview he has healingshrapnel wounds of his extremities. He has nohearing problems but decreased sight in his L eye.He is now awaiting internal fixation repair but thereis the soft tissue damage, and swelling and theinfection demands must be cleared before repair. Adrain is in place in his still very swollen leg. Patientis on antibiotics; appears depressed. He has lostconsiderable weight and muscle mass.It is too soon to tell how his leg will respond tocurrent treatment or when internal fixation can beapplied. If things go well, he will need several monthsof rehabilitation and physical therapy to regainstrength and full weight-bearing use of his leg.1. Northern Gaza5See Note 3.124
