5.1 RafahLocation of incident: At the patient’s home in Rafah,southern GazaCircumstances of injury: The patient was at homewith 6 other family members when the house was hitby a single drone missile and was partially destroyed.There had been heavy shelling on Rafah, but at themoment of this attack the situation was calm.Note from interviewer: Both the patient and hisfather, present during the interview, spoke in lowvoices and very briefly, as if they were uneasy orunwilling to cooperate.Others killed/injured in same event: No detailsEvacuation and care inside Gaza: Evacuation wasdelayed and took around 30 minutes, because therewere many attacks on the route. The patient wastaken to Nasser Hospital and remained there until 4Aug 2014. He was then transferred to the EuropeanHospital in Khan Younis where he remained until 10Aug 2014, before being referred to East Jerusalem.Another patient interviewed by the FFM team in thesame hospital recounted the same event at ErezCrossing. See J8.Evacuation out of Gaza: On 10 Aug 2014 the patientwas transferred to St Joseph Hospital in EastJerusalem, a process that took about 1.5 hoursin total. ‘Normal’ security checks reported at ErezCrossing. At the hospital he underwent a CT scan andthen T4-T5 laminectomy and removal of intraduralshrapnel, to relieve compression of the spinal cord;right mini thoracoscopy and drainage; debridementof bedsore.Comments on displacement: The patient’s homewas destroyed; the family has taken refuge withneighbours for the meantime.Comments on rehabilitation: The patient ispermanently paraplegic.Update: Subsequent medical report stated he wasdischarged on 21 Aug 2014 with recommendation forreferral to a rehabilitation centre, and a skin graft forthe bedsore.220
