Comment frominterviewer: two incisions healing with pink keloidson L side and LLQ; burns healing now on his Linner arm and R outer arm and on abdomen; hassignificant phantom pain in his R amputated leg.Date/time of incident: 1 Aug 2014 08:00Location of incident: At the patient’s home in Rafah,southern GazaCircumstances of injury: While the patients andall his family members were at home a missile hitthe stairs of their building. The family’s apartmentremained intact. They left the building and thenwere hit by a drone missile.Others killed/injured in same event: The patient’sbrother, sister and brother’s wife were killed in thestrike; his wife, son, daughter, brother and anothersister were injured. His wife is currently hospitalisedin Hebron in the West Bank with a bilateralamputation; his son was at Maqassad Hospital inEast Jerusalem until last Sunday (7 Sep 2014-Ed.)due to a L foot amputation.Evacuation and care inside Gaza: An ambulancearrived within 15 minutes and evacuated thechildren; another ambulance arrived 10 minuteslater and took the patient and his wife; a third tookhis brother and his brother’s wife (who were stillalive at the time); a fourth evacuated the dead. Thepatient was unconscious for 5 days and has nofurther details regarding his time in the hospital.He did not know of the other deaths or injuries untilhe returned to consciousness. He was told that hehad been initially evacuated to Abu Yousef Al NajjarHospital until that hospital came under attack 21 ; theICRC then evacuated him to the European Hospitalin Khan Younis where he was in ICU for 5 daysreceiving 16 units of blood. Someone had taken hisleg and his son’s foot to the hospital but these couldnot be re-attached. Someone retrieved his wife’stwo legs a week later.He was then transferred to Nasser Hospital, andfrom there, referred to East Jerusalem.21See note 19 above214
