4.1 Khan YounisCircumstances of injury: The patient’s family hadleft their homes to shelter in UNRWA schools. Theneighbourhood was almost empty, but the youngmen of the family visited their homes for two hourseach day because they were afraid of burglaries/looting. The patient was on such a visit and wasstanding near the door to his home when a house400m meters away from his home was hit by amissile from an F-16 aircraft. They went to thishouse to check if anyone had been injured when asecond missile fell near them.Others killed/injured in same event: The patient’sbrother and nephew (see below for detail) werekilled. Others were also injured, details unclear.Evacuation and care inside Gaza: An ambulance wascalled but while on its way to the area, it was forcedto go back due to tank shelling. The patient waitedfor 15 minutes before being evacuated. The patient’sbrother and nephew came to the area to help withtransferring the injured from the strike to theambulance, and his brother was then also injuredby shrapnel in the back. The patient’s nephewtransferred him and then was injured himself(fractures in the hand and the leg and shrapnel inthe chest and back). The ambulance transferred thepatient to the European Hospital in Khan Younisand he was immediately sent to the ICU because ofcardiac arrest. He stayed in the ICU for 5 days and2 more days on the wards before being referred toEast Jerusalem.Evacuation out of Gaza: The patient was transferredto St Joseph Hospital in East Jerusalem. The journeytook one hour and 10 minutes from the hospital toErez Crossing, 3 hours waiting before the Crossing(5 other ambulances were in front of them), and 10minutes inside the Crossing, where the patient waschecked using a scanner.
