There were about 10members of this neighbouring family in that house.The patient was sleeping there, and everyone else inthe single-story house and in the patient’s 2-storyfamily compound next door were awake. A missilefrom an F-16 aircraft suddenly struck a large 4-storyhousing complex situated immediately behind boththe small zinc-roof house and the family 2-storycompound. This large housing complex crumbledand fell forward onto the two dwellings in front of it,trapping people in the rubble.Others killed/injured in same event: Everyone gotout safely except for the patient, because he hadbeen sleeping and did not move quickly enough.Evacuation and care inside Gaza: It took half anhour to rescue the patient; his R leg was buriedunder rubble that included fragments from thezinc roof and metal from reinforced concrete, aswell as concrete. Finally the patient’s father andother family members had to drag the boy out ofthe rubble (because they could not lift it to freehim completely), which resulted in extensive rippedmuscle and soft tissue injuries to his R lower leg andfoot. He was then taken by ambulance to Shuhada’Al Aqsa hospital; he was there for 3 days, anddressings were applied, and was then transferred toShifa Hospital in Gaza City where he stayed 6 days.Physicians from Norway wanted to amputate hisL leg but a family member refused. Doctors fromMaqassad Hospital in East Jerusalem were visitingShifa Hospital, saw the patient and his injury, andarranged for his referral out of Gaza.Evacuation out of Gaza: No details were providedregarding crossing procedures. At MaqassadHospital in East Jerusalem, there was extensivedebridement of all soft tissue wounds, and skingrafts were applied to the entire L upper and lowerleg and to R upper leg; with repair to muscle damageto R lower leg. He is being carefully monitored toassess the full extent of vascular compromise to thetoes of the his R foot. The patient’s uncle reportsthat when they reached Maqassad Hospital, the toeswere still pink. Currently, the top superior aspect ofthe four toes that can be seen under the dressing174
