2.6 Gaza Beach & PortInjuries: Brain damage following stroke; extensiveburns on torso, arms and face; L leg amputationabove knee; R leg amputation at ankle; extubation;patient conscious, eyes track.Date/time of incident: 27 Jul 2014, 11:30Location of incident: At the patient’s home in theGaza Beach area, Gaza CityCircumstances of injury: A small bomb hit the roof(possibly a ‘roof-knock’ warning - Ed.) causingdamage to the roof and water leakage. The patient’sfather went out to see what had happened anda second strike hit the house, destroying it andburying the patient and his mother under the ruins.Others killed/injured in same event: The patient’smother, Jalila, was killed.Evacuation and care inside Gaza: Relatives andneighbours extracted the patient from the rubble.He was evacuated to Shifa Hospital (mode oftransport unclear), where his leg and foot wereamputated. The family believes the amputationwould not have been necessary had the requiredexperts and equipment been available.Evacuation out of Gaza: Patient was transferred toSt Joseph Hospital, East Jerusalem with a quick anduneventful transit through Erez Crossing. He wastransported alone to Jerusalem by ambulance withno companion.Comments on displacement: The family home isdestroyed. The 25-year-old brother of the patient,Anton, is now alone and sleeps in a church. Becausethe family is Christian, Anton was given the key tothe church and asked to be responsible but he ishaving trouble with other, Muslim youth who arealso seeking shelter in the church. The father seekshelp bringing the patient’s brother out of Gaza tothe hospital but the (Israeli-Ed.) authorities have notgranted this permission.Comments on rehabilitation: The patient has clinicalsigns of brain damage; extent is unclear. If able tofunction (stand up, follow commands) he will needextensive prosthesis work on both extremities andexpert training in mobility and use of aids. Need forplastics unclear.2. Gaza City155
