Only then did shesee a large piece of shrapnel stuck to her arm.Others killed/injured in same event: At least eightothers were killed according to this testimony.According to the patient, local TV reported that 40people were injured in the hospital during the attack,but she couldn’t confirm the figure.Evacuation and care inside Gaza: The patient wasinitially taken to the Emergency Room (ER). Due tothe attacks, all the patients in the hospital, togetherwith their families and staff members took refuge inER, on the ground floor. The injured from the attacks,including the patient, were then referred to NasserHospital in Khan Younis. There was heavy shootingon the street around them, so the trip to NasserHospital was difficult and dangerous. She arrivedin shock at ER at Nasser Hospital, where therehappened to be a foreign doctor from the EuropeanHospital (she can’t remember his name), whoperformed an arterioplasty (arterial reconstruction)using the saphenous vein from her right leg. Theoperation was successful and managed to save herarm from amputation, but a good amount of bone,nerve and muscle tissue was missing, so she wasput in external fixation and sent back to Shuhada’ AlAqsa hospital on 22 Jul 2014. During the return tripthe ambulance, carrying 7 patients, came under firetwice, while passing by a biscuit factory, which wascompletely destroyed in the course of the attack.Back in Shuhada’ Al Aqsa hospital, she sufferednecrosis in the muscle tissue and underwentdebridement surgery. According to the patient, thepiece of shrapnel extracted fromher wound at Shuhada’ Al Aqsa Hospital weighedalmost 1kg. 13Evacuation out of Gaza: On 6 Aug 2014 the patientwas referred to Medinat Hussein Al Tibbeya Hospitalin Amman, Jordan. She was taken from the hospitalto Erez Crossing in a convoy of 6 ambulances. Shewas very sick, in severe pain, and fainted severaltimes during the trip.
