Claudia Tamaro (PhD) has begun work with us but cannot be officiallyregistered until she passes her Englsh exam. The Univeristy have paid forher English courses and hopefully she will be successful soon.• WP19: PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF RNA BIOLOGYPID 32 has contributed to disseminate information and raise awareness ofthe importance of alternative splicing among the public by participating andco-organizing local and international scientific meetings, intensifingcollaborations and providing advisory services to clinicians in particular:Diana Baralle gave a talk to the Wessex genetics lab. Nov 08.She was also invited to a large local secondary school to talk to the students.• WP21: REACHOUT TO THE BROADER RNA COMMUNITYParticipant 32 continues to contribute to foster the WP objectives byenhancing existing links, promoting the establishment of new scientificcollaborations. D.Baralle has been invited to lead and co-write a set ofreviews for FEBS JOURNAL on alternative splicing 2009, reaching out tothe broader scientific community.b) Justification for zero expenditureWork has continued throughout the year despite no expenditure showing financially. PID32 decided touse the majority of the grant to fund a PhD position. However the position was not advertised until latein the year as we waited for the funds to be available in the UOS account- this did not happen until July08. At this point the post was advertised, interviewed and the position given to Claudia Tamaro.However the University of Southampton will not begin to pay her stipend until she has passed theEnglish examination, which she is due to re-take soon. So in the meantime she has worked for 6months now with no stipend and will begin getting paid on achieving the English qualification. At thispoint the expenditure will catch up with the work already undertaken.195
