Threepossible explanations as to <strong>the</strong>ir raison d'etre suggest<strong>the</strong>mselves. <strong>The</strong>y may have been struck on one <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> anniversaries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foundation or dedication <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Altar, possibly <strong>the</strong> fiftieth or sixtieth ; or, sinceClaudius was born on Aug. 1, 10 B.C., <strong>the</strong> day on which<strong>the</strong> ara Romae et Augusto was dedicated, he may have
