It will be seen to bear <strong>the</strong> word XI.QN on<strong>the</strong> reverse in place <strong>of</strong> XloZ. which had been <strong>the</strong>established form <strong>of</strong> inscription since letters first appearedupon <strong>the</strong> coinage. <strong>The</strong> ethnic in <strong>the</strong> genitiveplural was <strong>the</strong> form finally adopted for <strong>the</strong> Imperialcoinage, though <strong>the</strong> old <strong>and</strong>, for <strong>the</strong> Asiatic coast,uncommon place-name in <strong>the</strong> nominative singularheld its own for a little while among <strong>the</strong> earliest <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> new bronze pieces. On <strong>the</strong> assumption, <strong>the</strong>n, thatno silver was struck at Chios after <strong>the</strong> accession <strong>of</strong>Augustus we seem to have in this drachm <strong>the</strong> lastautonomous issue that has survived, with <strong>the</strong> possibleexception <strong>of</strong> type No. 80.<strong>The</strong> way in which <strong>the</strong> magistrate's name is writtenon this coin, TAAYKoX, is a pro<strong>of</strong> that <strong>the</strong> Ionicdialect was no longer employed at Chios, for <strong>the</strong> samename appears under <strong>the</strong> form TAAoKoZ at Erythraein <strong>the</strong> previous century (Brit.
