CONCERNING SOME ROETTIERS DIES. 157course have left them in his hands, but has not as yet seena reason to think that they would have the less belonged tohim because they were left in the custody of the properOfficer nor dos he conceive that his engraver can have anypretention of this kind if they be not founded on anby his Warrant.H.M. desires also to know what proof can be brought ofthe Government of England having treated in order to buythese puncheons at any time ivhen they might have had it in16their poicer to seise them.It is certainly far from H. Mys. intentions to do anywrong to Mrs . Eoettiers or her children and if he were toremove these puncheons out of the hands of young M r . Kotierhe would take into consideration what money should appearto have been paid by the late M r . Eotier singly to recoverthe possession of these things. But as they are evidently of more value to H.M. and theRoyal Family than to any body else and that the King hasseen nothing as yet to make him think any other ways thanthat the puncheons of all Medals struck for the late King orKing Charles or for any other persons whether privateor public do by their order belong to him he cannot allow oftheir being disposed of in any manner of way. But H.M.consents to referr the decision of this point of right toany person of Honour who shall be agreed upon as animpartial judge in this matter in case M r . Rotier canduring his minority referr it effectually with his Mothersconsent and in case it be found he cannot, H.M. is willingthat the decision be deferred till M r . Rotiers Majority, provided that he and his Mother sign the List and engagenot to dispose of them in the meantime in any manneror way under a proportionable penalty. This proposal is sojust that H.M. thinks it will answer M r8 . Rotiers intentionas well as his according as they are expressed in a Memoireand in a Letter signed Phillips and H.M. consents thatM r . Rotier should in the meantime proceed in the design of15Copy shows a blank between "an" and "by".16"The Government of England" seized all the dies in 1697,when John and his son James Roettiers were turned out of theTower for suspected treason, but the Treasury Board decided that" Roettiers is to have his dyes and puncheons that are usefull onelyfor medalls and have no relation to coining money ". See MS.Treasury Books, T. 29, vol. ix, fol. 253. I have told the story indetail in Brit. Num. Journal, vol. viii.
