Numis., v. 252) with the reverse type AVT-TPAIANAPICEBITEPMAAKIKTTAP Head of Trajan r.laureate, with aegis: in field L B, appears to belong toobverse type G : but it is impossible at present to verify thedescription. If this is correct, the coin was doubtless struckbefore the news of Trajan's deification reached Alexandria,as von Sallet points out and this confirms the : priority ofGr to H, as the latter obverse type is used with reverse type21, which shows Trajan deified.
III.THE MINT OF LUGDUNUM.(SEE PLATES V, VI.)SINCE de Sails undertook the important work ofclassifying the Roman coins according to their placeof mintage, considerable light has been thrown on thequestion ofthe coinage of Lugdunum by various writers,amongst whom may be mentioned Mr. Grueber l andSig. Laffranchi. 2While acknowledging my indebtednessto these writers and fully appreciating the valueof their contributions to the science of numismatics,I venture to think that the limits which they haveimposed upon the subject tend somewhat to obscureits connectedness as a whole. Thus Mr. Grueber dealsvery fully with the Gallic coins, but only carries hisconsideration as far as the year 5 B.C., and Sig. Laffranchi,who is not in agreement with Mr. Grueber onthe question of the mintage of the coins of Augustusstruck prior to 15 B.C., only begins his study of Lugdunumat this date and continues it to the time ofTiberius. My aim, therefore, in this paper is to setforth a somewhat fuller conspectus of the coinage offrom the time of its inauguration,Lugdunum and bytracing its development down to the reign of Galba, tobring the subject to its logical conclusion.1A.
