CHRONOLOGY OF THE COINS OF CHIOS. 233been expected to have served as a model for these coinsif there had been any really close connexion betweenthem. The amphora throughout is of the long thintype with a lip, first met with on coins of typeNo. 66 /3, but only occasionally then. The wreath, when it is used, is, like the obverse type, in very lowrelief,. and in the case of the issue with AEHMoZ it isof olive-leaves. On the one with AE12NI AHZcomposed[PI. IX. 2],which represents the later and moreindividualistic portion of the group, an ivy-wreath isfound. This form of wreath has already been notedonce on the bronze type No. 67 with AIZXINHZ, andlater on it will be seen fairly frequently.I have unfortunately not seen the coin withAZ(f>AAHZ, but I am including it among these issuesThis emblemon the strength of its symbol, a thyrsus.has so far only appeared once as a symbol (typeuse becomesNo. 66/3 with APTEMIAHPoZ),but itsfairly common in this period, thoughit extends overtoo long a time, so far as one can tell, to represent thesame magistrate. With regard to the magistrates whose names arethe firstrecorded we may note 'AprtpiSapos, as beingof the four men whom I am supposing to have servedin this period as well as in the last. 108 Je/c^oyis oneof the witnesses to the foreign element in the populationreferred to above. The name is no doubt a formof Decimus. Mei/e/cpar?]? has already been met withon one of the tetradrachms of Alexandrine types, but,as was observed in the comment on type No. 60, therecan be no question of this drachm having been among108See type No. 663.NUMISU.
