Coh. 40.The year 10 B.C. marks the inauguration of a regularcopper coinage at Lugdunum, which was supplementedin 2 B.C. by three denominations of brass (orichalcum).This series continues, apparently without a break, untilabout the year A. D. 21, and has for its reverse type arepresentation of the famous Altar of Lugdunum, withthe legend ROMETAVC (Romae et Augusto). We have13here a type peculiar to Lugdunum and it is from;this well-known series that we derive some of themost important evidence, not only for assigning othercoins to the same mint, but for determining the exactstatus of the mint itself.The series may be classified as follows :Class I.Augustus [10-3 B.C.].39.
