PRIMITIAE HERACLIENSES. 185EY on the reverse. If we consider t,he claims ofEY0Y, the coin with this abbreviation published inNum. Chron., 1896, p. 4, 3 (5 I)has on the reverse asmall vase between the legs of Herakles. This samesymbol occurs on a EY coin in the MClean Coll.and others (1 h), where the Athena head of the obverseis very similar to that of the EY0Y coin. Alreadythe cataloguer of the EY-POA coin (4>y; from thesame obverse die as the M c Clean coin just mentioned)^as hesitated between the rival claims. These may seem trivial points, but it is as well to get.ne data concerning them as exact as possible, in viewof what they are supposed to prove. It is clear thatthe equation EY = EY4>P isvery uncertain, and thatif EY is an artist workingc. 370 B.C.- we must fallback on the expedient of " a later EY " to dispose ofthe coins of 280 B.C.We will now consider the case of APIZTOZENOZ.Garrucci, p. 132, No. 34, describes a coinalready publishedby Imhoof-Blumer (Gr. Miinz., p. 2, PI. liv. 2)where this name isengraved on the crest of thehelmet, and APIZTOEE isline of the reverse.repeated on the exergualThere is also an A on the obverse. The coin is of the ordinary types of the earlierHeraclean staters. Sir Arthur Evans proposes toassign other coins reading simply A to the same artist, and to identify him with an API who appears oncertain coins of Tarentum. On the Tarentine coinsAPI appears in association with KAA, an abbreviationalso found on coins of Heraclea. KAA therefore isanother artist working for both mints. That Aristoxenos is an artist's signature is probableenough. That A and API are shortened forms of thisNUMISM. CHRON., VOL. XVII, SERIES IV.Q
