CONCERNING SOME ROETTIERS DIES.1O5indeed, considering the Kings present Circumstances, a veryextraordinary proposal. M rs Roettiers .family must needsbe well with some of those Officers ;& whatever is procuredfrom them in her favour, will at the same time be in favourof themselves. She should however take care, how she makes this mattertoo publick ; least it should raise a claim of another sort, which she may be forced to comply with.M r .Taylor of the Temple & M r . Price y e Attorney,to whom she appeals, as acting in a commission fromM r . Eoettier to get the Medals &c. into his hands, mightprobably know little of y e Rights of y e Crown. They hadrather to be sure that Roettiers Family should have them, than That which is on the Throne ;and they thoughtperhaps, that y e getting them into Roettiers hands was theproper way of restoring them to y e right Owner. And indeed to do M r . Roettier justice he frequently spokeof that Collection as belonging to y e Crown, & styled ity e Kings Closet of Medals nor dos the Memorialle; give yleast Hint of his ever saying, they belonged to himself: thoit is true, he had often said that it had cost him some money,to retrieve them.If that Summ was as the Memoriall says about 40,000 14given by M r . Roettier to his Sisters, we may consider howvaluable the collection must needs be ;since M r . Roettier issupposed to have had a Right to his share in them, whichhe did not purchase and to be sure as to y e other ;Shares, had a very good bargain. It is alledged that the Old Puncheons & Dyes for strikingMedals by order of y e Crown before the Restoration remainnot now in the proper Officers hand at the Tower.Perhaps so nor is it a wonder that during the longRebellion they should be embezzled. Besides before theRestoration there was little done of that kind by y e Orderof our Kings, that was very curious ;and that consequentlywas worth enquiring after or claiming whene y Kingreturned. It is the practise of all Officers upon great Revolutions toplunder as much as they can of what is committed to theircharge. Old Roettier might intend to reserve what he tookfor y e Crown upon a new Restoration. But seeing nolikelyhood of that and having been long in possession ofthose things without any demand made of them he might at1440,000 livres ; see No. IV.
