THE PENNIES OF EDWARD I, II,AND III. 291St. Edmunds. 6 As the series of coins is practicallycomplete one variety is missing at London, and oneat Durham, but these probably exist, although theyhave not yet been recorded it is unnecessary to repeatthe names of the mints after each class. XV d, thoughdiffering from its immediate predecessors in smalldetails only, was struck after the accession ofEdward III, as were also certain Durham specimensof XV c.GEOUP XI :first crown, easily recognizable by aconstant malformation of the spear- head on the dexterside, which is bent toward the dexter like a hook.XI a [PI. X. 31]. Long, narrow face, with verypointed chin; neat, squarely formed initial cross;letter H with absolutely straight-edged down-posts(Fig. C. 4).Coins of this type were struck at Berwick,as well as at the four regular mints.XI b [PI. X. 32]. The king's face made with a newand smaller iron; lettering slightly smaller; H haswell-marked serifs, and Q a more angular back.XI c (not figured). Distinguished from XI b bythe use of a peculiar form of the letter A (Fig. C. 5).No London specimen has yet been found.GROUP XII : second crown, the central ornament ofwhich iscomposed of three wedges, broad ends uppermost,and much resembles the conventional "broadarrow ".6 Coins were also struck at Berwick-on-Tweed during the lateryears of Edward I and the early years of his son, but with oneexception, which will be referred to under XI a, they are of localand almost barbarous workmanship, and their classification,which has nothing in common with that of the issues of theregular mints, has yet to be worked out.
