252 J. MAVKOGOKDATO.Symbols appear again as observed under type No. 80,and are all objects that have already served in thisway. The star is to be noted, in addition to the wingedcaduceus, on one of the three specimens representingtype No. 85, but as the only symbol on type No. 86.No. 87 a and /?. These types without magistrates'names, and both represented by a single piece inindifferent condition, reintroduce the later form ofinscription with XI HIM, first noticed under typeNo. 76 /?.The former of the two recalls the coins oftype No. 70 of similar size. In fact, the resemblancebetween them and the evidently late character of thepresent types made me hesitate in attributing typeNo. 70 to the beginning of this period. But, on thewhole, I think that the points of difference which theyshow are sufficiently marked. Apart from the dissimilarinscriptions, there is no bunch of grapes onthese coins, and the weight of the large one is verymuch below that of the apparently carefully regulatedflans of type No. 70.The n of the inscription in No. 87 a is a very lateform, and not at all in keeping with the letteringmostly employed on coins of this period. A still earlierand isolated instance of this fl has already been notedon type No. 62 (3.Nos. 88-9. These interesting coins have already beenpretty fully discussed, but a few more remarks withregard to their style seem to be called for. Thewreath on the reverse of No. 88, tied to left, is quitea new feature among the Chian issues and does notappear again. The form of amphora used, besidesbeing precisely the same as that on the bronze typesNos. 90-2, and very similar to that on the drachms
