8 G. F. HILL.Lead. 33 mm. Wt. 403-6 grains (26-1 5 grammes).[PI. I. 13.] From Hirsch's Auction, Katal.16xxxiii, lot 707, Taf. xvii. This is evidently not a lead tessera, as it is calledin the Sale Catalogue, but an impression from the diesof a stater of the period 387-374 B.C. 17 It is interestingas revealing the square shape and small size (not morethan 26 mm. sq.) of the obverse or anvil die. A staterwith similar reverse type and symbol has been describedby18Imhoof-Blumer.ATHENS.The class of curious little bronze coins which M.Svoronos 19 has identified as the /co'AAv/Soi of the fifthcentury was represented in the British Museum byonly three specimens ;one with obv. crab, rev. sole ofr. foot (Svoronos 478), was amongst the unidentifiedcoins, and was recognized by M. Svoronos himself onhis last visit to England the other is included under;Aegina in B. M. C. : Attica, p. 143, No. 223 ;a third, obv. bucranium, rev. X, was also among the unidentifiedcoins, and does not seem to be described by M. Svoronos. The generous donation of thirty-three specimens byMr. J. Anderson of Athens has to some extent filledthe gap, thoughit must be remembered that M. Svoronosenumerates 645 varieties of this coinage. As specimensI illustrate the following:18At this sale the British Museum also acquired lots 127 (Latis)and 612 (Aeneia).17Cp. the Lycian trial-piece in lead, S.
