160 HELEN FARQUHAR.to the late D r .Taylor being at Paris, the said Norbert desiredhim upon his return to make an agreement with his sistersfor the purchase of the said Medals, which the said M r .accordingly did & the said puncheons & diesover hither in the beginning of A.D. 1724.Taylorwere broughtThat as soon asthe said Norbert had got over the said puncheons & dies heset about executing a project which several curious menfriends to the Kings cause put him upon as a thing whichwould be of service to his Majesty by spreading Medals ofhis own & the Royal Family of Stuarts over Europe, &particularly over England, & as what would be likewise ofconsiderable advantage to himself.The project was to strike sets of Medals from his Fathersand his own puncheons & to have a Book wrote to give anaccount of the occasion of striking each Medal as well as torepresent the form of it. Great numbers of these puncheons& dies not being finished, some of them cracked and itbeing necessary to make others to compleat the history ofthe Royal Family, the executing of this project could not bedone without a vast deal of labour and expense ;howeverhe was so possessed of the notion that it would be of serviceto the Kings cause, that he determined to go on with theproject, and engaged me in the said year 1724 to write theBook to give an account of the said Medals, I accordinglyundertook it, and at his request drew up a letter to give thewhich the said NorbertKing an account of this projectsigned and sent to his Majesty in Oct. 1724.Ever since that time till his death, I was in a mannerconstantly with him, have been with him to wait on thePremier President of Rouen, Abbe Bignon, Pere ChamillardAbbe de Bosc & abundance of other curious and learned mento take measures for the better executing the same projectwhich has been the subject of several hundred conversationsbetween us ;And I solemnly declare that by all his discourseitappeared to me that he always considered the saidpuncheons & dies (after he had bought them) as his ownabsolute property, to which nobody else had any right orpretensions, & that I never imagined by any expressionsthat he dropped, that the crown of England or that hispresent Majesty had any property in them & though to:tempt the Kings friends to come to see his closet, he hassometimes called it the Kings closet, I never understood itin any other sense than as it contained the pictures andrepresentations of his Majesty and his Royal Ancestors and;however other people might understand the meaning of such

We therefore Winifried Widowof the said Norbert do hereby oblige and engage ourselvesnot to alienate the said puncheons or to part with them outof our possession till I the said James Roettiers come to beof age.
