Since, therefore, on these coinsAugustusis called Pater Patriae and Caius Consuldesignatus, we have practicallyno alternativebut to2 B.C.,assign these coins to the period between Feb. 5,and Dec. 31, 1 B.C.There are perhaps no coins of Augustus which werestruck in so great numbers and obtained so wide acirculation as these aurei and denarii ; also they wereimitated in distant parts of the Empire. So that, evenif they were the only gold and silver coins struck atLugdunum during this period, the mint must havebeen kept well employed.The examples illustrated [PI. VI. 19, 20] show twovariations in the style of portraiture.No. 19 closelycorresponds with the style of the sestertius [PI. V. 15],while No. 20 resembles the dupondius [PI. As to the date at which this changeoccurred somewhat divergent views have been expressed.Sig.
