In addition to punch-marking,<strong>the</strong> coins have been submitted to <strong>the</strong> most drastictests <strong>of</strong> genuineness many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m show not only <strong>the</strong>;usual stabs, but large holes which have been drilledalmost through <strong>the</strong> coins ;in one case <strong>the</strong> weight hasbeen thus reduced to 219-3 grs. (14-21 grms.). That suchtesting was justified is proved by one specimen whichis a mere shell <strong>of</strong> silver, <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interiorhaving disappeared, leaving only traces <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> copper<strong>of</strong> which it was apparently composed. Yet this coinshows, punched on <strong>the</strong> cheek <strong>of</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na, what lookslike a pair <strong>of</strong> signs <strong>of</strong> some Oriental script ; whichsuggests that punch-marks were sometimes impressedon plated coins in order to divert suspicion.Obv.
