204 C. OMAN.Ill, to Tripolis in 105, and to Ascalon in 104. Tyreand Aradus had got similar immunities somewhatearlier. All these places show their quasi-independenceby issuing, instead of the normal Seleucid coinage withthe king's head, new types with the city gods (as atTyre and Tripolis) or goddesses (as at Sidon, Aradus, and Ascalon) on the obverse, while the reverse alwaysannounces that the place isIEPA KAI AYTONOMOZ,and gives the date of the year since itsindependencewas conceded. On recovering great part of his realm in 111-110 B.C.,Grypus proceeded to issue a currency of tetrad rachmswhich entirely differed from those of his first reign. We do not again find either the standing Zeus Ouranios, nor the Pyre of Sandan, nor the Pallas Nikephoros asthe reverse type these are never met in conjunction:with his later portrait. He chose instead to revert tothe familiar Seleucid type of the seated Zeus Nikephoros,as it had been issued in earlier years byAntiochus Epiphanes, Antiochus V, and the twoAlexanders, Bala and Zabina. It had been revivedby Philopator during the three years in which he hadbeen in possession of Antioch and the metropolitanmint. Grypus continued it without a break, whilePhilopator, when deprived of Antioch, fell back on thetype of Pallas Nikephoros, which he had used in theearly years of the civil war, before he got hold of theSyrian capital. There are no late Zeus-tetradrachmsof Philopator, all the coinage of his last fifteen years ofreign being of the Pallas type, save some exceedingly rarepieces with the old Phoenician eagle and palm-branch,and others still rarer with a standing Tyche. I aminclined todeduce from this fact that the type of theseated Zeus had got identified with the Antiochene
