DIVUS AUGUSTUS. 278unmistakably resembles the heads of Claudius, Drusus, and Germanicus [see PI. XI. 13].The legend DIVA AVCVSTA leaves practically nodoubt that the personage here representedis Livia.A seated figure, generally described as that of Livia, without descriptive legend, occurs frequently on coinsof Augustus and Tiberius (cf. supra). But since thedeification of Livia was decreed, according to Suetonius(Claud. 11) at the beginning of the reign of Claudius,we naturally do not find the appellation DIVA on anycoins issued before that date. Thus we have a conclusivereason for assigning this type, found inconjunction with the legend DIVA AVGVSTA,to theperiod of Claudius.Cohen describes two coins of the Divus Augustusseries in second brass with the reverses IOVI-DEO-S-C,temple of four columns (Coh. 181), and S IGNIS-RECEPTIS S P.Q.R, buckler, inscribed CL-V, betweenaquila and signum (Coh. 268). These I have omittedfrom the present consideration since their authenticityseems open to question. After the reign of Claudius the memorial dupondiiand asses of Class I cease. There are, however, certainaurei and denarii, struck during the period immediatelyfollowing the death of Nero, and generally describedas "autonomous" coins, of which the following maybe noted.11. Obv. DIVVS AVGVSTVS. Radiate head ofAugustus r.Rev. H ISPAN I A.
