90 E A. SYDENHAM.occur with the obverse legends, NERO CAESAR A V-CVSTVS or IMP NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS, thehead is of the more compact Roman style ;itmay be inferred that the legendfrom whichIMP NERO CAESARAVC-PP was not used by the Roman mint, but belongssolely to that of Lugdunum [PI. VI. 33].Mr. Mattingly has described certain of Nero's asses, countermarked with the letters PR. which he veryreasonably considers were so stamped by the followersof Vindex in lieu of issuing a special copper currencycorresponding with the revolutionary ("autonomous")denarii. The existence of these countermarked assesstrengthens our argument for assigning coins ofLugdunum, since they exhibit the characteristics ofstyle mentioned above, and it is certainly natural thatVindex should have appropriated the money issuedlocally. Thus by arguing forwards from the group of assesof A. D. 60-3, and backwards from the denarii andcounter-marked asses of A. D. 68, we are able to connecttogether a tolerably completeseries of coins struck atLugdunum during the second half of Nero's reign.semisses of the CERTamenAccordingly copperQVINQ.wewwa/e type may probably be assigned tothis mint ;also many with the type of Roma seated. The brass equivalents with these types, on the otherhand, belong entirety to Rome. A number of sestertii, dupondii, and asses may be assigned to Lugdunum onconsiderations of style, but as their reverse types aresimilar to those of Rome, it isunnecessary toenumerate them.* Num. CJiron., 1913, "The Coinage of the Civil Wars, A.D.68 70".
