THE MEDALS OF MATTEO DE' PASTI. 311The church of San Francesco, though unfinished, was dedicatedin 1450 (VF = Votum fecit). The attribution of this medal toPasti has, I believe, never been doubted. In character, however, the portrait differs somewhat from those on his other medals, resembling more the relief in a square frame in San Francesco.(The portrait in a wreath, on a pillar in the Chapel of the Madonnadell' Acqua, is a much finer work.) The date 1450 is also late andisolated in the series of medals ;but this in itself may account forthe slight change in style, if Pasti had done no medals for threeor four years.23.
