IX.DIVUS AUGUSTUS.[SEEPLATE XL][THE substance of the following notes was writtenbefore I had read Sig. Laffranchi's article " Qli assied idupondii commemorativi di Augusto e diAgrippa", which appeared in the Rimsta italiana,1910. Laffranchi's conclusions as to the dating ofthe coins agreed in almost every case with my owa ;hence, in this respect, these notes cannot claim to bean entirely fresh contribution to the science of numismatics,although they may possibly serve a purpose inbringing to the notice of collectors and other?, unacquaintedwith Laffranchi's work, a more exactclassification of a very interesting series of coins.Moreover, by including several examples, omitted bySig. Laffranchi, I have endeavoured to present ascomplete a view of the series as possible.]The aim of this article is twofold: (1)tr draw upa chronological arrangement of the memoral coins ofAugustus, and (2) to consider in what rispect theythrow light on the theory of the imperial;ultus.The coins struck in memory of the divine Augustuscomprise a number of different types o varying significance; but, as regards their main characteristics,into th'ee classes.they may be grouped naturallyCLASS I. Asses and dupondii with Jie radiate headof Augustus, accompanied by thf legend DIVVS-
DFVUS AUGUSTUS. 259AVGVSTVS PATER or DIVVS AVGVSTVS;without any specificin which they were struck.butreference to the reign or periodCLASS II. Gold, silver, or bronze coins with thehead or full-length figure of Augustus, and legendssimilar to the preceding, but in conjunction with theportrait or titles of the reigning emperor. 1'CLASS " 'III. Restitution coins, i. e. revivals, orreproductions,titlesof earlier types, accompanied with theof the emperor under whom they were struck,and bearing the word RESTITVIT, usually in theabbreviated form, REST.The coins of Classes II and III obviously presentno difficulty with regard to date ;the following notes,therefore, are concerned mainly with the classificationof the asses and dupondii of Class I.It may be safely assumed that no coins of the DivusAugustus type were struck during the actual reign ofAugustus, although some of the earlier numismatistshave not hesitated to adopt this hypothesis. 2 The oftquotedpassage of Suetonius (Aug. 52),from whichthere seems no reason to dissent, that Augustus permittedno worship of himself apart from the goddessRoma in the provinces, and entirely prohibited anysuch honour in the capital itself, would seem to3constitute sufficient evidence on the point ; especiallyas the Divus Augustus coins we are about to considerare entirely of Roman mintage.1Many coins of this class are of non-Roman mintage, a largeproportion having been struck in Spain.2Hobler, Roman Coins, vol. i, p. 40.8 Cf.
