Chron., 1912,p. 40).In his earlier work he seeks to explain manyabbreviated names as those <strong>of</strong> artists, to identify some<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se with longer abbreviations <strong>and</strong> full names, <strong>and</strong>finally to show that many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se artists worked fordifferent mints. For example, <strong>the</strong> artist Philistion isthought to have worked for Tarentum, Velia, Heraclea,Thurium, <strong>and</strong> Metapontum, although his full nameonly occurs on <strong>the</strong> Velian coins 5 (Horsemen <strong>of</strong> Tarentum,pp. 110-1-2). It- is apparent that such coins must beroughly contemporary. An interval <strong>of</strong> fifty yearsbetween any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, while not impossible, would bedisconcerting; an interval <strong>of</strong> from eighty to onehundred years is obviously impossible.
