The Photon Factory Advanced Ring (PF-AR)
is a 6.5-GeV synchrotron light source at KEK.
The PF-AR has been operated with unique
operation modes, 6.5-GeV single bunch operations
dedicated to pulsed X-ray experiments
and 5.0-GeV two-bunch operations
devoted to clinical applications. The PF-AR
was largely upgraded during 2001 so that the
vacuum and control systems were renewed
as well as a new north-west experimental hall
was constructed. Considerable efforts have been made to reinforce insertion devices and to achieve higher beam stability.
In FY 2004, the total operation time and the failure time were 4857 hours and 98.5 hours, respectively. A new invacuum
type undulator was installed last year, and another one will be installed next summer. Test on a new injection
scheme using a pulsed quadrupole magnet was successfully carried out. Lower emittance optics is under study. We
also report abrupt drops of the beam lifetime which were observed at the PF-AR.
Upgrade and Current Status of the PF Ring Vacuum System
The vacuum system for the KEK Photon Fac-
tory (PF) was extensively modified in 2005 as
part of the PF ring straight-sections upgrade
project. This project required replacements of the quad magnets in both northern and southern straight-sections that
account for nearly two-thirds of the whole circumference. Therefore, the vacuum ducts in these new quad magnets
(Q-ducts), as well as the vacuum ducts in their related bend magnets (B-ducts), needed to be replaced. The new Qducts
have a narrower cross-section and are equipped with new 4-electrode beam position monitors, and the new Bducts
are furnished with new distributed ion pumps. After the installation of these vacuum chambers, we omitted
the thermal in-situ baking, anticipating that beam scrubbing would provide more efficient cleaning. Furthermore,
even pre-baking before installation was not performed for the chambers in the northern half in order to evaluate the
effect of the pre-baking during the early period of the commissioning. Details of these modifications, as well as the
current status of the new vacuum system, will be presented.
Present Status of the UVSOR-II Electron Storage Ring
UVSOR electron storage ring, which was a
2nd-generation synchrotron radiation (SR)
light source for VUV and soft x-ray region,
has been renewed as UVSOR-II at the begin-
ning of 2003. Because of the improvement, the beam emittance has been reduced from 165nm-rad to 27nm-rad, and
longer straight sections with smaller vertical betatron functions have been provided. In addition to a helical/linear
