THPLS — Poster Session 29-Jun-06 16:00 - 18:00 Fast Polarization Switching at the SLS Microspectroscopy Beamline POLLUX POLLUX is a new microspectroscopy facility which will be operated at a bending magnet M. Böge, U. Flechsig, J. Raabe, T. Schilcher (PSI) at the Swiss Light Source (SLS). It offers spectroscopy with sub-micron spatial resolution for polymer science and magnetism. First user operation is scheduled for summer 2006. One of the novel envisaged options of the beamline is the usage of circular polarized light. The circular polarization will be generated by a localized angular steering of the electron beam within the bending magnet. This is accomplished by means of the SLS Fast Orbit Feedback system which allows to stabilize the electron beam to the micrometer level up to frequencies of 100 Hz. Due to the adapting coupling compensation involving dedicated adjacent skew quadrupoles, this steering becomes practically transparent for the other beamlines. Polarization switching rates of a few Hz are within reach. The system design and first measurements are presented. Installation and Test Results of the Achromatic Superconducting Wiggler in the Taiwan Light Source In order to increase more high flux x-ray photon beams for the Taiwan Light Source, the achromatic superconducting wiggler has been installed and tested in a 1.5 GeV storage C.-H. Chang, H.-P. Chang, H.-H. Chen, T.-C. Fan, M.-H. Huang, C.-S. Hwang, F.-Y. Lin (NSRRC) ring. The 3.1 Tesla superconducting wiggler will be operated in a 4.5 K liquid helium cryogenic system. In this work, the operation experience and test results of the achromatic superconducting wiggler are described. Research and Development of a Linear Polarization Superconducting Undulator at the NSLS To attain high brightness and wide tuning range of hard x-ray radiation from a medium S. Chouhan, D.A. Harder, G. Rakowsky, J. Skaritka, T. Tanabe (BNL) energy storage ring requires short period, higher field undulators. A short version of a 15 mm period superconducting undulator prototype is under development at the NSLS. The structures are being built with a new NbTi wire with artificial pinning centers, which has been shown to attain higher critical current than is achievable with conventional NbTi. In this paper the winding concept and plans for prototype testing are described. Magnetic Design and Measurements of a Cryo-capable In-vacuum Undulator for NSLS A new, 1m long, 18 mm period, NdFeB hybrid, in-vacuum undulator has just been in- G. Rakowsky, D.A. Harder, J. Skaritka, T. Tanabe (BNL) stalled in the NSLS X-ray Ring, replacing the 15-year old X25 Wiggler. The device has been designed and mechanically cold tested to 150K for future operation as a cryo-permanent magnet undulator*. The magnet arrays, assembled at NSLS, use new, high-remanence, hightemperature NdFeB magnets developed for hybrid car motors. The end termination design maximizes the number of poles radiating in-phase. We made extensive use of an improved, quantitative pulsed wire method for trajectory and multipole measurements and shimming. FRXAPA — Linear Colliders, Lepton Accelerators and New Acceleration Techniques Neutrino Factories and Beta Beams The presentation will review the various con- M.S. Zisman (LBNL) cepts of Neutrino Factories and Beta Beams and indicate the main challenges in terms of beam performance and technological developments. It will also present the world-wide organization to define and carry out the necessary R&D for component design, beam simulations of facility performance, and benchmarking of key subsystems via actual beam tests. Currently approved subsystem tests include the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE), under construction at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and the Mercury Intense Target (MERIT) experiment, to be carried out at <strong>CERN</strong>.
