Toro : Sangha Toro : Sangha The Sangha area is shared by the Arou and Dyon tribes. Whatever their tribal origin, they all bear the name « Dolo ». It refers to water holes discovered by Dyèndoulou (founding ancestor of the Dyon) and his dog. A Nommo (aquatic divinity) in the shape of a woman emerged from it, fled and left behind a stone (Duge) as a sign of alliance (page 242). Dyèndoulou built Ogol Da’s first house at the very spot of her disappearance. The Nommo’s intervention was to seal a treaty of friendship between the Dogon ancestor and the indigenous people who were already living there (Denise Paulme, Organisation sociale des Dogon). Solange de Ganay (Les devises des Dogons) explains the meaning of Dogon names. Each tribe, region, village and village quarter has a name that refers to a mythic or historic event. These names often refer to itineraries taken and describe the circumstances of the migrants' arrival in their new habitat. They sometimes evoke encounters made with supernatural beings that underlie possible interactions between invaders and indigenous peoples. In the same way, an individual's first name refers to circumstances surrounding his/her birth and to events that preceded it. Thirteen villages make up the Sangha agglomeration. Some like Diamini Na and Sangui are set back from the cliff on the plateau and others like Bongo and Gogoli stretch out up to the edge of the escarpment. The village of Sangha is divided in two parts that are separated by the « field of the hogon » : Ogol Da and Ogol Ley. Each family compound is composed of a central courtyard surrounded by several buildings and granaries. Many of these houses have an entrance hall which gives access to the inner courtyard. The edges of the roof terraces are protected by low walls. Roof terraces are used for drying and storing various food items. Houses, roofs and outside walls are uniformly plastered. The whole looks like an abstract composition made of forms with smooth angles and outlines. Dyon et Arou se partagent l’agglomération de Sangha. Peu importe leur origine tribale, tous portent le patronyme de « Dolo ». Ce nom se réfère aux points d'eau découverts par Dyèndoulou (ancêtre fondateur des Dyon) et son chien. Un Nommo (divinité aquatique) en surgit sous l’apparence d’une femme. Elle s’enfuit et laissa derrière elle une pierre (Duge) en signe d’alliance (page 242). Dyèndoulou érigea la toute première maison d’Ogol Da à l’endroit où elle avait disparu. Cette alliance était un pacte d’amitié que l’ancêtre avait passé, par l’intermédiaire du Nommo, avec les premiers habitants du lieu (Denise Paulme, Organisation sociale des Dogon). Ces noms renseignent sur les itinéraires parcourus et décrivent les circonstances d'arrivée des migrants dans leur nouvel habitat. Ils évoquent parfois des rencontres faites avec des êtres surnaturels qui sous-tendent des interactions des nouveaux venus avec d’anciennes populations. De la même façon, chaque individu porte un prénom qui révèle les circonstances de sa naissance ou les événements qui l’ont précédée. La région de Sangha regroupe treize villages. Certains comme Diamini Na et Sangui se trouvent en retrait sur le plateau et d'autres tels que Bongo et Gogoli s'étendent jusque sur les bords de la falaise. Le village de Sangha se divise en deux parties séparées par le « champ du hogon » : Ogol Da et Ogol Ley. Chaque concession se compose de plusieurs bâtiments qui donnent sur une cour intérieure. Depuis la rue, un couloir d’entrée ou vestibule y donne accès. Les toits en terrasse sont entourés d'une sorte de parapet. On y fait maints travaux domestiques. Les maisons, les toits et les murs extérieurs sont crépis de manière uniforme.
