Kanaga mask<br />
Masque Kanaga<br />
The significance of the Kanaga mask remains obscure.<br />
There are a variety of interpretations. It has been compared<br />
to a bird <strong>and</strong> a female spirit, among other things.<br />
Kanaga dance performances are spectacular. Masks often<br />
appear in numbers. The dancers turn their heads in a<br />
circular movement <strong>and</strong> they touch the ground with the<br />
upper part of the mask. In some villages dancers smash<br />
the top of the head piece against the ground, whereas in<br />
others the mask just brushes it. Sometimes, in the heat<br />
of the action, a mask breaks.<br />
La signification du masque Kanaga reste obscure. Il y a<br />
une multitude d'interprétations. Il a été comparé entre<br />
autres à un oiseau et à un esprit féminin. La danse<br />
du Kanaga est spectaculaire. Ces masques dansent en<br />
groupe. Ils exécutent avec la tête un mouvement circulaire<br />
et touchent le sol avec l'extrémité du masque. Dans<br />
certains villages, les danseurs heurtent le sol violemment<br />
avec le haut du masque et dans d’autres, ils le<br />
frôlent seulement. Parfois un masque se casse dans le<br />
feu de l'action.<br />
