The smithy
La forge
The smithy is a sober looking shelter consisting of a
thatched roof resting on a piled up stone wall. It often
leans on one side against a natural rock outcrop. It
is the working place where the blacksmith and his apprentices
practise their craft. One can hear from far
away the noise of the hammer that hits the anvil and
the sound of the bellows that blow up the fire. Blacksmiths
form endogamous castes that live on the fringe
of Dogon society. They do not marry people outside
their community. Blacksmiths are subdivided into distinct
castes, the Jèmèm and the Irim being the principal
ones.
The Jèmèm live mainly in the Seno plain. They plunge
their roots in a faraway past and do not belong to any
ethnic group in particular. Known since ancient times
for their mastery, they were highly skilled in extraction
and smelting techniques of iron ore. But colonial times
gave access to other sources of supply and the trade
of iron processing subsequently came to a halt by the
late 1940s. The Yatenga (Burkina Faso) of the early 2 nd
millennium witnessed an intense metallurgical activity
that is ascribed to the Kibse/Dogon (page 38). At the
time of the Songhay and Mossi conquests, it was usual to
remove blacksmiths from their home villages and settle
them down elsewhere in conquered territory. Their
know-how in manufacturing weapons and agricultural
tools was vital to the new ruling powers. Today in the
Yatenga, various clans of blacksmiths, such as the Giti
and Zorom, say they descend from the Dogon. Their
history refers to cases of persecution and enslavement at
the hands of the Mossi invaders.
The Dogon of the plateau and the escarpment lacked in
blacksmiths. It is said that they turned to the Jèmèm of
the Seno plain to learn the trade of blacksmithing. They
used pig iron which they bought from the latter. Historical
reality, however, seems more complex. The Irim
descend from ancient farmers whose origins are not
limited to the Dogon-Mande alone. Their caste is also
composed of an indigenous substrate and of former
river populations. The researchers of the MAESAO
(Mission Archéologique et Ethnoarchéologique Suisse
en Afrique de l’Ouest) also support the idea that the
Bwa people were part of the early blacksmiths who
populated the plateau. The area counts many ancient
iron ore extraction sites. Slag heaps and remnants of
old earthen furnaces reveal their presence. Thus far,
archaeological research has established that the beginnings
of this regional industry go as far back as the
6 th century A.D. This activity will further develop from
période coloniale a facilité l'accès à d'autres sources
d'approvisionnement.
