Songo is situated on the plateau near to Bandiagara.
It is inhabited by five clans : the Yanogue, Karambe,
Guindo, Degoga and Seyba. As researchers C. Kleinitz
and B. Dietz explain in their study Signs of the Times,
Times of the Signs, the village’s power structure is based
on the clans’ order of arrival in the region. Agricultural
land belongs to the Yanogue and Karambe. Whilst the
institution of the hogon no longer exists, this position
was formerly held by the village’s founding clan, the
Yanogue. But the village head is chosen among the
Karambe and the Guindo are in charge of the circumcision
rituals. The Degoga and Seyba do not seem to hold
any public function.
The ancient village (Songo Kolo) is located on top of
the hill lying to the East of today’s Songo. Only some
ruins still stand. On a photo taken in 1905 by Louis
Desplagnes (Le Plateau Central Nigérien), one can see the
outside walls of the old village houses that run along
the edge of the hilltop. This same photo has been republished
by Ferdinando Fagnola in Voyage à Bandiagara.
Genealogical estimates show that Songo Kolo was
probably founded in the 17 th century. The new village
at the hill’s foot was probably built during the second
half of the 19 th century. A long time ago the Sigui, the
ritual that is held every sixty years, came to an end on
the plateau at Songo. This was no longer the case in
1972 when Jean Rouch, for the purpose of his account,
brought his documentary to an end at Songo (Sigui page
326). In fact, the last Sigui held there goes back to mid-
19 th century. In 2006, François Claerhout, author of
Songho, Dogon des trois collines, gathered the words of
Songo’s eldest, a centenarian named El Hadj Kalilou.
He recounted that Islam had imposed itself in the area
at the beginning of the 20 th century and Songo was by
that time no longer a part of the Sigui rites. The old
man also recalled that in their commitment to islamisation,
he and those of his age group destroyed the village’s
masks.
The rock paintings at the circumcision site of Kondi
Pegue are well documented. Yet, those at the open cave
at Songo Kolo are much less known. The place is no
longer in use and its access is difficult. Just like its illus-

Les terres agricoles appartiennent aux Yanogué et
aux Karambé. L’institution du hogon a été abandonnée
mais cette fonction appartenait autrefois au clan fondateur
du village, les Yanogué. Par contre, le chef du village
est Karambé et les Guindo sont responsables des rituels
de circoncision. Dégoga et Seyba ne semblent pas avoir
de fonctions particulières.
L’ancien Songo (Songo Kolo) se trouve sur le sommet
d’un piton rocheux, à l’est du village actuel. Il n’en
subsiste que quelques ruines. Une photo prise en 1905
par Louis Desplagnes (Le Plateau Central Nigérien) nous
montre les façades extérieures du vieux village qui, tel
un rempart, longent le rebord de la colline. Cette même
photo a été reprise par Ferdinando Fagnola dans Voyage
à Bandiagara. La généalogie des familles du lieu indique
que sa fondation daterait du 17 e siècle. Le nouveau village
en contrebas ne daterait que de la deuxième moitié
du 19 e siècle. Il y a longtemps, c’est à Songo que s’achevait
le rituel soixantenaire du Sigui. Ce n'était plus le cas
en 1972 quand Jean Rouch, pour les besoins de son
récit, voulut y terminer son documentaire (Sigui page
326). En fait, le dernier Sigui tenu à Songo remonte vers
le milieu du 19 e siècle. En 2006, François Claerhout,
l’auteur de Songho, Dogon des trois collines, recueillit les paroles
du doyen du village, un vieillard centenaire du nom
d’El Hadj Kalilou. Ce dernier lui confirma que l’islam
s’était imposé dans la région au début du 20 e siècle,
époque à laquelle le Sigui n’avait déjà plus cours à Songo.
Il se souvint aussi que lui et ceux de sa génération détruisirent
les masques car ils voulèrent convertir Songo
à la nouvelle religion.
Les peintures rupestres de l’auvent de la circoncision à
Kondi Pegue sont bien connues. Par contre, celles de la
grotte ouverte de Songo Kolo le sont beaucoup moins.
L’endroit n’est plus en usage et l’accès en est difficile.
