Bounou (Lowel Gueou) 1990
Lowel Gueou : Bounou
Lowel Gueou : Bounou
Bounou is situated at a stone’s throw from Kargue. The
villagers say they are Dogon. Yet their origins remain
shrouded in mystery to this day. They are not historically
tied to the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment.
Their presence in the area predates the arrival of the
Janage. They speak Bangi Me. Linguists consider it to
be a language isolate. It has no known relationship
with any other language. It could well be that Bangi Me
reaches back to an indigenous language spoken prior
to the expansion of the Dogon-Mande.
The village has sought protection on top of a rocky
slope that overlooks a closed valley which is likely to be
partially flooded in the rainy season. Bounou is unique
in its architecture. The two-storied houses look like
enormous cubes with round outlines. Pilasters are integrated
into the façades of all houses. The terrace roofs
are used for the usual household tasks. The region is
rich in palm wood. Its availability explains the considerable
size of these buildings.
