graphy on Djenne published in 1903, mentions a certain
« Vi Samana Mana » who was chief of Djenne by
the end of the 12 th century. Does this name refer to
the ancestors of the Saman ? (Une Cité Soudanaise,
Djenné, métropole du Delta Central du Niger.) The settling
down of the Saman on the plateau at Kani Gogouna
results from migrations that span some 300 years and
that were all caused by conflicts that were shaking the
Niger river belt. By the 15 th century the first migrants
reached the south of the Bandiagara escarpment near
the village of Kani Bonzon. According to local traditions
their arrival in the area preceded that of the Dogon.
Still other migrants crossed the plateau directly from
the shores of the Niger river. The various paths taken
all lead to the Wadouba region in the centre of the plateau.
The Kansaye founded the town of Kani Gogouna
in the early 19 th century. « Wa Samanu » is the
name of its founder. It strangely sounds like the one of
the former chief of Djenne « Vi Samana Mana ». He
was born of a Dogon mother and a Samana father.
Dogon and Saman concluded alliances and shared a
common territory in relative peace (Gilles Holder, Poussière,
ô poussière ! La Cité-État sama du pays dogon, Mali).
Because of their territorial precedence, the Dogon retained
ritual control of the land. The Saman, on the
other hand, held political authority over the country.
But very soon, in an effort to extend their domination
on the plateau, the Saman sided at first with the theocratic
state of Sekou Amadou, and thereafter with El
Hadj Omar. Both these states were leading a holy war in
the Niger river belt. The Dogon never forgave their
Saman allies their treachery. There is a Dogon mask
that portrays a Samana. During funerals, it is used for
entertainment. The dancer makes clumsy movements
and the spectators laugh at it.
