The Binou shrine
Le sanctuaire du Binou
The ancestor cult does not suffice to explain the many
facettes of Dogon religion. Spirits and supernatural
forces inhabit the world of the invisible. Priests use
them in favour of their clan. The Binou cult is in this
sense similar to shamanism. Whilst in trance the shaman
has the ability to travel in this universe which is not accessible
to ordinary man. There he will find answers and
remedies that will serve the wellbeing of his community.
It is thought by some researchers that shamanism goes
back to paleolithic times and that African and European
rock art could be one of its manifestations.
Several patrilineal descent groups form a clan. Clan leadership
belongs to the Binou priest. His mission consists
in maintaining harmony between clan members and the
cosmic forces that govern the universe. He is the
guarantor of their security and wellbeing. He fights epidemics
and natural calamities. Clan members will call on
him for all kinds of problems : unexplained diseases, etc.
He participates, in conjunction with the hogon, in agra-
