Satimbe mask<br />

Masque Satimbé<br />

According to myth, the Satimbe mask represents the<br />

woman who captured the old Albarga <strong>and</strong> who stole the<br />

masks from the Andoumboulou (supernatural beings).<br />

One day whilst w<strong>and</strong>ering in the bush, she stumbled<br />

upon them by surprise. They fled <strong>and</strong> left behind the old<br />

man, their masks <strong>and</strong> costumes. Clad in her new attire,<br />

she returned home with her captive. Perceiving her disguise<br />

as a threat to male supremacy, the men from her<br />

village took away her newly found acquisitions. They<br />

elle rentra chez elle avec son captif. Percevant cet<br />

accoutrement comme une menace pour la suprématie<br />

masculine, les hommes de son village lui confisquèrent<br />

ses trouvailles. Les masques furent mis à l’abri dans une<br />
