flowers, birds, jewellery etc., is dependent on <strong>the</strong> skills <strong>and</strong> experience <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> artisan.<br />

Role <strong>of</strong> children 150<br />

When semi-precious stones are concerned children are ma<strong>in</strong>ly work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> 'jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g',<br />

'pre-shap<strong>in</strong>g' <strong>and</strong> 'polish<strong>in</strong>g'. Some children are also <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> carv<strong>in</strong>g, but <strong>the</strong><br />

number is smaller because carv<strong>in</strong>g is a highly skilled activity. Girl children <strong>and</strong> women are ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> bead mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> rough stones. Besides facet<strong>in</strong>g, most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> abovementioned<br />

processes do not require any technical skills.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> precious stones, children are ma<strong>in</strong>ly employed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al<br />

polish<strong>in</strong>g. The risk that a child damages <strong>the</strong> high value <strong>of</strong> a precious stone <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se processes is<br />

limited.<br />

6.4 Influx <strong>of</strong> child <strong>labour</strong> <strong>and</strong> expansion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry: <strong>the</strong> pull <strong>and</strong> push factors<br />

There are no reliable statistics on <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> children employed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>gem</strong> polish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

<strong>of</strong> Jaipur. Official <strong>and</strong> un<strong>of</strong>ficial estimates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> child <strong>labour</strong>ers vary between 10,000<br />

<strong>and</strong> 20,000. The follow<strong>in</strong>g table shows <strong>the</strong>se estimates.<br />
