<strong>garment</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>gem</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry? What are <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial <strong>labour</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ards accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> <strong>India</strong>n<br />

government (relevant <strong>Child</strong> Labour legislation), <strong>the</strong> ILO Conventions (see footnote no. 5) <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Convention on <strong>the</strong> Rights <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Child</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations? Special attention will be paid<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Child</strong> <strong>labour</strong> (Regulation <strong>and</strong> Prohibition) Act <strong>of</strong> 1986.<br />

- What is <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> education <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> children till today? What k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> education (formal, nonformal,<br />

vocational tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, on-<strong>the</strong>-job tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g) did <strong>the</strong>y attend or are still attend<strong>in</strong>g? For how<br />

many hours per day?<br />

- What are <strong>the</strong> results thus far, if any, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> National <strong>Child</strong> Labour Policy launched by <strong>the</strong><br />

government with regard to child <strong>labour</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>gem</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> Jaipur (Rajasthan)?<br />

B. Questions concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sectors<br />

- What are <strong>the</strong> structures <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>garment</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>gem</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry? For example <strong>the</strong> system <strong>of</strong> (sub)contract<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

- What are <strong>the</strong> production processes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>garment</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>gem</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry?<br />

- Which part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> product price received by <strong>the</strong> manufacturer goes to <strong>the</strong> <strong>adult</strong>s <strong>and</strong>/or children<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> form <strong>of</strong> wages?<br />

- What is <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>India</strong>n economy? For example, measured <strong>in</strong><br />

terms <strong>of</strong> turnover <strong>and</strong> employment generation?<br />

- Where are (parts <strong>of</strong>) <strong>the</strong> <strong>garment</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>gem</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry located <strong>and</strong> why <strong>the</strong>re?<br />

- In which way do <strong>the</strong> conditions <strong>of</strong> production <strong>in</strong> Export Process<strong>in</strong>g Zones differ from o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

areas? Conditions like for example: cheap l<strong>and</strong>, lower taxes, lower import/<strong>export</strong> duties, tax<br />

holidays <strong>and</strong> wage levels.<br />

forced/bonded <strong>labour</strong>, treatment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> children (abuse), safety <strong>and</strong> basic health facilities like ventilation, light, toilet, wash<strong>in</strong>g facilities, dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

water facilities, etc.
