3. Fever. Many children said that <strong>the</strong>y <strong>of</strong>ten suffered from fever due to keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uously<br />

<strong>in</strong> cold water dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> work. The temperature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body goes down <strong>and</strong> one more <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

catches a flue or a cold.<br />

4. Eye stra<strong>in</strong>. A fourth health problem was related to <strong>the</strong> eyes <strong>and</strong> only older workers who were<br />

compla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong>ir eyesight. When an <strong>adult</strong> worker was asked whe<strong>the</strong>r look<strong>in</strong>g at t<strong>in</strong>y emerald<br />

<strong>gem</strong> stones while facet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m for 8 to 10 hours per day for 10 to 15 years, did not damage<br />

his eyes, he replied by say<strong>in</strong>g that 'emeralds are famous for hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> heal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> eyes<br />

if one stares at <strong>the</strong>m for a long time' 164 .<br />

Future plans<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> children who were <strong>in</strong>terviewed <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong>ir work place wanted to become workshopowners<br />

or carry out o<strong>the</strong>r pr<strong>of</strong>essions related to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. The child workers who were<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviewed outside <strong>the</strong> work place, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ex-work<strong>in</strong>g children, all had future plans which were<br />

not related to <strong>the</strong> work <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>gem</strong> polish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

The ex-work<strong>in</strong>g children who had been withdrawn from work <strong>and</strong> who attended <strong>the</strong> Special<br />

School, said dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview that <strong>the</strong>y first liked <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g because <strong>the</strong>y were earn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

money, but now <strong>the</strong>y see education <strong>and</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g to write <strong>and</strong> read as more important.<br />

The work<strong>in</strong>g girl child<br />

The Muslim girl child was not sent to work outside <strong>the</strong> house. The 'purdah' system or 'seclusion'<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> girl from <strong>the</strong> life <strong>and</strong> males outside <strong>the</strong> house was very strictly followed by <strong>the</strong> Muslim<br />

families. Girls were <strong>the</strong>refore employed <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> house. Though no girl children younger than<br />

14 years had been come across dur<strong>in</strong>g visits to <strong>the</strong> units, <strong>in</strong>formants said that <strong>the</strong>re were 5,000 girl<br />

children under 14 years <strong>of</strong> age who worked at home process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>gem</strong> stones. But it was very difficult<br />

to estimate <strong>the</strong>ir number as it was far from easy to get access to <strong>the</strong> households <strong>in</strong> Jaipur. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviewed girl children <strong>of</strong> this study, started process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>gem</strong> stones around 10 or 11 years <strong>of</strong> age<br />

or later, because before that age <strong>the</strong>y were more <strong>of</strong>ten needed <strong>in</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g care <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> younger<br />

sibl<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> household.<br />

The girl child was doubly exploited because she worked <strong>the</strong> whole day <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> house whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>gem</strong> stones <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r jobs for money, but moreover she helped <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> household <strong>and</strong><br />

took care <strong>of</strong> sibl<strong>in</strong>gs. The process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>gem</strong> stones, ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> cheapest semi-precious coloured<br />

<strong>gem</strong> stones, ei<strong>the</strong>r existed <strong>in</strong> drill<strong>in</strong>g holes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> small stones by h<strong>and</strong> or by mach<strong>in</strong>e, or cutt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> polish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>gem</strong> stones. The <strong>in</strong>terviewed girl children were not taught <strong>the</strong> skills by a<br />

craftsman.<br />

It was observed that <strong>the</strong> Muslim girl child was sometimes sent to school, but when she reached<br />

puberty or her <strong>in</strong>come was needed she could be withdrawn from <strong>the</strong> school at any time. Most <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> girl children, however, were completely illiterate <strong>and</strong> were prepared for marriage soon. The<br />

girls who had been withdrawn from school felt very lonely as <strong>the</strong>y could not regularly meet <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

friends any more. The girl child hardly had a social life or a childhood. The <strong>in</strong>terviewed girls said<br />

164 In a book on <strong>the</strong> occult power <strong>of</strong> <strong>gem</strong> stones was written: 'Throughout history, <strong>the</strong> emerald is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> highest valued stones for its<br />

heal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> protective powers. It is said that by gaz<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> emerald, one improves eyesight'. In: Manik Ch<strong>and</strong> Ja<strong>in</strong>, 1988, Occult Power <strong>of</strong><br />
